How can ChatGPT answer if it doesn't already have a finished answer waiting? Your phone keyboard gives you a clue. As you type, it uses what's already there to suggest what could come next. ChatGPT builds text in a similar step-by-step way, but at a much greater scale. Here's the key: it doesn't pull out a ready-made reply. It predicts a likely next token from the context-the text so far. A token is a small piece of text: it can be a whole word or just part of one. Then it adds that piece to the text and uses the updated context to predict again. Piece by piece, the answer takes shape. But a smooth answer isn't proof of truth. It can sound informed and still be wrong. So how can it answer without a finished answer? It predicts likely text from the context, piece by piece.
