Can AI really replace software engineers? If you've asked a chatbot to draft an email, you've seen the pattern: it gives you a first pass, and you decide what's right and fix what isn't. AI can do something similar with code: ask it for a small feature, and it can produce useful code quickly. But writing code is only one part of engineering. Someone has to work out what the software should do, check that it does it, and make sure the pieces work reliably. That means catching mistakes and deciding whether the result is safe to use. AI can help with parts of this work, and as tools improve, the balance will change. But generating code isn't delivering dependable software. So, can AI replace engineers? Not completely-not by itself. It can take on some coding, but engineers still guide, check, and own the result.
