Why does your hair stand up after you comb it? Electric charge is a property of matter, with two kinds: positive and negative. Like charges repel; opposite charges attract. When a comb rubs your hair, electrons-tiny particles with negative charge-move between them. Here's the turn: the comb doesn't lift each strand. Rubbing leaves the hairs with the same kind of charge, so they push apart. That's why your hair stands up after combing.
