Confusing saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons-and mixing up alkane, alkene, and alkyne? Think of sorting schoolbooks into labelled piles: first, you need one clear rule. A hydrocarbon is a compound made of only carbon and hydrogen. But the class is not decided by how many carbon atoms it has. The deciding rule is the bond between carbon atoms. If those carbon atoms are joined only by single bonds, the hydrocarbon is saturated. Its class name is alkane. If there is even one double bond, it becomes unsaturated. A triple bond also makes it unsaturated. Double bonds give alkenes, and triple bonds give alkynes. One double or triple bond is enough to change the class, whatever the number of carbon atoms. So don't memorise three names as a disconnected list. Read the carbon-carbon bond first: single means saturated alkane; double means unsaturated alkene; triple means unsaturated alkyne.
