Should you say, "I am" or "I are"? When you talk about who you are, or how you feel, you are talking about a state of being. These little words-am, is, and are-help describe it. But they do not all go with the same person or thing. Think of them as a matching team: I am; one person or thing is; you, we, they, or more than one are. Try it: I am happy. Your friend is happy. You and your friends are happy. The feeling stayed the same-happy-but the word changed. Why? The person or thing changes, so the be-word changes too. The person or thing controls the choice. So, should you say "I am" or "I are"? "I am." English matches the be-word to who you mean: I am, you are, and he or she is.
