When you use an ATM, which computer type is commonly linked to those bank transactions? Start with the single-user types: a microcomputer is your everyday laptop, tablet, or phone; a workstation is a powerful computer for one person, often used for engineering or design. Now the multi-user systems: a minicomputer serves several users, while a mainframe handles huge volumes of work for many users. Banks commonly use mainframes for high-volume transactions. But these five types are not one ladder from small to powerful; each has a different job. A supercomputer tackles massive calculations for demanding scientific work. CDC 6600, from 1964, is commonly credited as the first supercomputer. India's PARAM 8000, developed by C-DAC in 1991, is another key exam fact. Remember the set: microcomputer, minicomputer, mainframe, supercomputer, and workstation. So, for large bank transactions, the usual exam answer is mainframe; banks use other computer types too.
