Video narration

Why is your bank deposit insured? Blame the 1930s. Between 1930 and 1933, about nine thousand US banks failed. There was no national deposit insurance, so depositors could lose their savings. Every rumour became dangerous. People rushed to withdraw first, and runs spread from bank to bank. In 1933, the US created deposit insurance. If your money is guaranteed even when a bank fails, there's little reason to panic. Runs on insured banks became rare. Most safeguards were born this way. 1907 gave us the Federal Reserve. 2008 brought tougher capital rules. Every safeguard is a scar from a past crisis.
