What is hiding in your school bag today: a red pencil, some water, three books, or this notebook? Each word gives information about a noun, but not the same kind of information. Red tells what kind the pencil is. It is an adjective of quality. Some tells how much water there is. It is an adjective of quantity. Three tells how many books there are. It is an adjective of number. This notebook shows which notebook is meant. This is a demonstrative adjective; that ruler points to one farther away. Now the bag is no longer a jumble of describing words. Each kind gives a different answer. Quality answers, "What kind?" Quantity answers, "How much?" Number answers, "How many?" Demonstrative answers, "Which one?" So, what was hiding in your school bag? Four kinds of adjectives: quality, quantity, number, and demonstrative, each describing its nouns in a different way.
