Why does a flying face bend downward instead of traveling in a straight line? Picture tossing a ball across a room. At the instant it leaves your hand, it's already moving forward, and it keeps that motion as it travels. But the ball is also falling. Gravity pulls it downward the whole time-not after its forward motion stops. Both happen at once. So imagine the toss in two directions at once: forward across the room, and down toward the floor. At first, it hasn't dropped much. A little later, it has moved farther forward and fallen farther down. Those motions join into one path, bending lower as the ball crosses the room. Here's the turn: the emoticon isn't steering itself downward. It keeps moving forward while gravity pulls it down. That's why the silly flying face curves: it's just like a tossed ball.
