Why are leaves green—is that just their natural color, or what they do with sunlight? A green shirt looks green because it reflects green light to your eyes. Leaves work similarly: sunlight has many colors, and chlorophyll handles them differently. Chlorophyll absorbs red and blue light more strongly than green. That absorbed energy powers photosynthesis, which helps plants make food. So the green isn't mainly what chlorophyll uses; it's the light reflected to your eyes.
