Why would anyone spend years building a stone monument for one person? Like a cemetery grave, it was built to protect and remember the dead. But this was a royal tomb. Egyptians believed a pharaoh needed protection and preparation for the afterlife. Its enormous size expressed that belief, while showing the power of the kingdom that built it.
