Was being a raja mainly about having the power to command people? Think of a class captain or team leader: the role carries responsibility for guiding others and keeping things fair. In the Vedic period, a raja-an ancient chief or king-was expected to do something similar for the community. His authority had a purpose: protecting people, maintaining order, and supporting the group. That meant courage, fairness in judgment, generosity, and duty. Duty means doing what your role requires, even when selfish power would be easier. But this was an ideal, not a guarantee. The Vedic period changed over time, so every raja did not rule in the same way. Still, the key idea is simple: the raja was not merely a powerful ruler. So, what was a good raja expected to be? A courageous protector, a fair and generous leader, and someone who placed duty above personal power.
